Your New Company

My client is an owner and operator of a growing portfolio of over 30,000 single-family rental homes in the U.S. and multi-family apartments in Canada. They provide high-quality rental housing options for families across the United States and Canada through their technology-enabled operating platform and dedicated on-the-ground operating teams. They are seeking a Senior Manager, Property Accounting to join their team at their head office located in Toronto.

Your New Role

As the Senior Manager, Property Accounting, you will be a dynamic, energetic, and highly motivated individual who can join the team as a leader for their Canadian multi-family rental and development accounting team. This role requires an ability to work collaboratively with many constituents across the organization, including the asset management, property management, and development management teams. You will bring a strong understanding of finance, operations, and accounting.

Your responsibilities will include:

Providing leadership and mentorship to the property accounting, development accounting, and accounts payable teams.
Directing the monthly full cycle of accounting, ensuring accurate and timely month-end close.
Overseeing the internal monthly reporting process, including reviewing reports for senior management and external stakeholders.
Managing the cash flow forecasting process, including overseeing funding and distribution.
Overseeing the preparation and review of all financial statements and reports for investor reporting purposes.
Reviewing analytical financial reports to assist with month-end and quarter-end variance analysis.
Directing the annual audit process and resolving accounting matters with auditors.
Collaborating with asset management and corporate finance on the annual budget and quarterly reforecast processes.
Overseeing and enforcing proper internal controls, including recommending improvements.
Leading process improvements to enhance the accuracy of accounting and financial reporting processes.
Collaborating with IT on ERP system implementation and other system enhancements.
Onboarding rental or development properties, establishing appropriate accounting and reporting processes.
Working with other teams and senior management on special projects as required.

The position will lead a team of 8 and reports directly to the Chief Accounting Officer in the corporate office.

What You’ll Need to Succeed

University degree in Finance, Commerce (or relevant field) and CPA certified.
Preferred candidates come from Big 4 firms with private real estate clients and a focus on audit. Ideal candidates will be at the manager or senior manager level for 3+ years.
Open to a Controller in a private company, with 8–10 years in a controller role.
Prior experience with private real estate, either in residential or commercial property accounting or development accounting.
Thorough knowledge of IFRS accounting and financial reporting.
Self-starter who is able to work independently in a fast-paced and challenging environment.
Demonstrates strong attention to detail and adheres to high standards for work quality.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills are mandatory.
Self-motivated with strong work ethic and willingness to learn.
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and experience with other Microsoft Office products.
Knowledge of Microsoft Dynamics 365 and Yardi would be an asset.
Residential real estate experience preferred.
