Azure Cloud Engineer - Hybrid - Toronto - 12 months

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Contractor, IT Consultant (Azure Cloud Security Engineer) to join our security team. As an Contractor, IT Technical Consultant, the incumbent would be responsible for ensuring the security and compliance of our cloud infrastructure within the Microsoft Azure environment. You would collaborate with various teams to design, implement and maintain a robust cloud security posture that aligns with best practices and regulatory requirements.
Your expertise would help protect our client's cloud resources and sensitive data while optimizing the security posture of our cloud-based applications and services. You would also play a key role in detecting, analyzing, and responding to security threats in real time.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Security Architecture and Design:
    • Design, implement, and maintain secure cloud architectures in Microsoft Azure.
    • Develop security best practices and guidelines for cloud environments to minimize risk.
    • Evaluate and implement security solutions to protect applications, workloads, virtual machines, databases, and network infrastructure.
  • Cloud Security Monitoring & Incident Response:
    • Continuously monitor the security of Azure cloud environments using native tools such as Azure Security Center, as well as third-party solutions.
    • Identify, analyze, and respond to security incidents and vulnerabilities in the cloud environment.
    • Perform root cause analysis of security incidents and implement corrective actions to improve the security posture.
  • Identity and Access Management (IAM):
    • Manage and enforce identity and access policies across Microsoft Entra ID to ensure the right level of access for users, groups, and applications.
    • Implement, maintain and continuously improve Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), Conditional Access, Privileged Identity Management (PIM), and Role-Based Access Control (RBAC).
  • Compliance & Regulatory Frameworks:
    • Ensure that the cloud infrastructure meets industry standards, security frameworks, and regulatory requirements such as NIST CSF.
    • Conduct security audits, vulnerability assessments, and risk analysis to identify potential threats to cloud systems.
    • Collaborate with internal and external auditors to ensure compliance with internal and regulatory security standards and privacy regulations.
  • Cloud Security Automation & Tools:
    • Leverage tools like Azure Automation, Azure Policy, and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) to automate security controls and remediation.
    • Work with development teams to establish a DevSecOps paradigm and to integrate security tools and practices into the CI/CD pipeline.
  • Collaboration & Communication:
    • Work closely with cross-functional teams such as Developers, Networking, Solution and Enterprise Architects, and Internal Audit to ensure security is integrated into the design and deployment processes.
    • Provide security guidance and mentoring to team members to enhance their understanding of cloud security.
  • Research and Development:
    • Stay up-to-date with the latest security threats, trends, and best practices specific to Azure and cloud technologies.
    • Continuously evaluate, recommend and implement new security technologies to improve overall security posture of the cloud environment.

REQUIRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Security, or related field (or equivalent work experience)
  • Proven experience (3+ years) working with Azure cloud security services and tools
  • Expertise in Identity and Access Management (Entra ID, RBAC, PIM, MFA)
  • Strong understanding of other security and security-adjacent Azure technologies such as Defender for Cloud Apps, Defender for Endpoint, Microsoft Intune, etc.
  • Strong understanding of Azure infrastructure components (VMs, App Services, Azure Storage, Networking, etc.) and how they fit into a secure cloud architecture
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Purview and related technologies, including encryption and data protection techniques in cloud environments
  • Familiarity with cloud security automation and DevSecOps tools such as Terraform, Azure DevOps, and Azure Policy
  • Experience with Azure Security Center, Azure Sentinel, and Azure Firewall
  • Knowledge of network security (NSGs, ASGs, VPNs, Azure DDoS Protection)
  • Understanding of security frameworks and standards (NIST, ISO 27001, SOC 2, CIS, etc.)
  • Experience in incident response and troubleshooting security issues within the cloud environment
  • Certifications (preferred but not required):
    • Microsoft Certified: Azure Security Engineer Associate (AZ-500)
    • Microsoft Cybersecurity Architect (SC-100)
    • Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP)
    • Certified Cloud Security Professional (CCSP)
DESIRABLE SKILLS:
  • Experience with third-party security tools (firewalls, vulnerability scanners, IDS/IPS, SIEMs)
  • Experience with cloud-native security architectures and Zero Trust principles
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to think critically in high-pressure situations
  • Experience with other major cloud service providers (AWS/GCP)
