Senior Estimator | Commercial Construction

Position Overview:
The Senior Estimator is responsible for leading the preparation of detailed cost estimates, budgets, and quotes for various construction projects. This role involves overseeing the entire project tendering process, including the creation of RFP documents, soliciting bids from trades, and ensuring accurate analysis of project specifications, construction drawings, and bid documents. The Senior Estimator will complete detailed takeoffs, collect and compare quotes from subcontractors, vendors, and suppliers, and evaluate and level tender bids. This individual will bring creativity and passion to their work, developing innovative estimating solutions and contributing to a dynamic and supportive work environment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead estimator on multiple complex construction projects, including design-build, construction management, or stipulated sum project types.
  • Oversee project procurement, bid packages, and preconstruction activities.
  • Manage the project tendering and costing processes.
  • Create RFP documents and solicit bids from trades.
  • Analyze project specifications, construction drawings, and bid documents.
  • Assemble accurate, detailed, and well-organized budgets and estimates.
  • Support and mentor junior team members.
  • Complete detailed takeoffs for estimates.
  • Collect, compare, and analyze quotes from subcontractors, vendors, and suppliers.
  • Evaluate and level tender bids.
  • Conduct regular risk assessments to proactively manage increased costs or delayed schedules in construction projects.
  • Provide estimating and cost engineering solutions using creativity and experience.
  • Build and maintain relationships with sub-trades for future opportunities.

Secondary Responsibilities:
  • Identify labor, material, costs, and time requirements for projects by researching proposals, recent invoices, drawings, and related documents.
  • Revise cost estimate reports to reflect design changes, client needs, or changes in the availability of materials or labor.
  • Advise preconstruction and operations teams on opportunities to improve the cost-effectiveness of construction.
  • Strive to improve company processes and the quality of the finished product.
  • Mentor and support the development of junior team members, providing guidance and technical assistance.
Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as an estimator.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Construction Engineering Technology diploma preferred.
  • Experience with Design-Build projects in various sectors, with a preference for light industrial and commercial experience.
  • Proficient understanding of current building systems, materials, and building codes.
  • Proficient understanding of financial aspects of construction, including estimating, budgeting, cost control, and reporting.
  • Ability to anticipate constructability issues in moderate to complex situations and think creatively to develop solutions.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced organization and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing situations.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
